Women (places) in Bonn

Women have shaped the development of our city at all times and are doing so today more than ever. It is important to make this work visible.

This is why the House of Women's History, supported by the Equal Opportunities Office of the City of Bonn, is publishing the series "Bonner Frauen(orte)". The short portraits in the four volumes offer a diverse panorama of exciting biographies that not only provide new perspectives on the city of Bonn. In their historical breadth, they also show the similarities that women still have today in the fight for their rights.

The path of the former federal capital Bonn (1949 to 1991) was also shaped by women, whom we would like to introduce to you in this digital version of "Bonn Women (places)". Further portraits will be added to this page over time. It is exciting to read how women go their own way and thus become role models for others.

Project "Women's Places NRW"

A project by the NRW Women's Council, funded by the Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Refugees and Integration of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, also aims to make the work of women in public spaces more visible, to honor them and tell their stories. This is why "women's places" are being created throughout North Rhine-Westphalia, which draw attention to women's personalities who have worked locally with a stele or memorial plaque.

The House of Women's History Bonn, together with the Bonn Equal Opportunities Office, successfully applied for four women's sites in Bonn - on May 8, 2024, there was a ceremonial inauguration of the stelae on Bischofsplatz at the Old Town Hall (Johanna Elberskirchen and the Silent Heroines), on Elisabeth-Selbert-Platz at the City Hall (Elisabeth Selbert) and in the park of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Haus (Maria von Linden).
