Cable car planning

Current status of planning

Step by step to the ropeway: Several steps are necessary to plan and build a ropeway. In the perception of many people, a construction project only begins when the excavators start rolling. However, it takes a few years from the idea to the first gondolas floating up the Venusberg. This is because a major project like this goes through many planning phases:

Preliminary considerations 2012 The 2020 transport development plan includes a proposal to build a cable car up the Venusberg.
2016 - 2017 A feasibility study establishes that the cable car is technically possible. Citizens were able to get involved in four public dialogs.
8.11.2021 The preliminary result of the standardized assessment is that the cable car makes economic sense.
Political
decisions
9.12.2021 The city council decides to register the cable car for the state's public transport requirements plan. The regional council approves this later.
9.3.2022 The state parliament's transport committee decides to include the cable car in the requirements plan and the public transport infrastructure financing plan based on it.
2nd half of 2022 The City Council decides on the next steps.
Further planning The planning is further specified. The city commissions preliminary reports on climate, nature conservation and other issues. Soil surveys are also carried out along the planned route.
On the basis of the specified planning and preliminary reports, the city puts the realization of the cable car out to public tender. After a new city council resolution, the selected cable car provider is commissioned.
On the basis of the detailed planning, together with the provider,
a planning approval procedure with public participation takes place.
Realization Following the planning approval decision, the standardized assessment is completed, i.e. the cost-benefit ratio is reviewed once again.
The city council decides to apply for funding and build the cable car.
Once the funding has been approved, the cable car is built and put into operation.

The project is still at an early planning stage. The city has so far had a study carried out to determine whether the cable car is technically feasible and makes economic sense as part of local public transport. A  feasibility study (opens in a new tab) in 2017 had already shown that a cable car to the Venusberg is technically possible. Numerous citizens submitted their suggestions on the municipal participation platform  Bonn-macht-mit (opens in a new tab), which were taken into account in the further examination.

In the meantime, a comprehensive, so-called  standardized evaluation has proven this: A cable car in Bonn makes economic sense and is therefore worthy of funding.

The actual planning of the cable car was refined in the background. For example, the city of Bonn has taken numerous comments from citizens into account. More in-depth planning will only take place after the city council has commissioned the administration with further planning. According to the current planning, the route for the cable car is as follows:

The planned route runs from Venusberg via Loki-Schmidt-Platz (formerly Hindenburgplatz), the DB stop "UN Campus" and the Rheinaue and ends on the other side of the Rhine at the future S 13 stop "Schießbergweg/Ramersdorf"
