Overview
If you move to Bonn, you must register according to the Federal Registration Act (BMG) after you move in. This must be done in person and with a designated appointment (number always per family member). See below for exceptions to the registration requirement.
In the case of families, it is sufficient for one of the persons required to register to do so. This person must bring the identity cards or passports and , if applicable, residence permits of all family members to the appointment. Foreign identity documents must be valid, otherwise no registration can take place.
Young people up to the age of 16 must be registered by the person whose home they are moving into (usually the legal guardian).
In the case of family members who have reached the age of majority, the person must appear in person or issue a power of attorney, which must then be brought along to the registration.
For persons under guardianship, the obligation lies with the person who has the right of residence. In this case, the appointment or a corresponding court order as well as a valid identification document must be presented.
Anyone who is required to register can also be represented, but in this case must have signed the registration form themselves. The representative must be expressly authorized in writing to make the registration and must also be able to provide all necessary information about the person concerned. All identification documents of the person moving in must also be brought to the appointment.
To register, you must have the landlord's or owner's confirmation of residence completed and signed. If you are moving into your own property, please complete and sign this form yourself. If it is a recently acquired property, please bring an extract from the land register with you to ensure that your registration can take place even if you are not yet listed as the owner in the city's land register.
In the case of foreign civil status documents, legalization or an apostille is required in addition to a translation. This depends on the country in which the civil status certificate was issued. If legalization or an apostille is required, this must also be obtained. Otherwise, the civil status certificate cannot be recognized.
You can check which country requires legalization or an apostille on the website of the Federal Foreign Office. You will find the link to the website of the Federal Foreign Office under the tab "Forms and links".
An appointment is required for this request. You can book your appointment directly online. You will find the link under "Forms and links".
Is your car moving with you? Remember to change the address in the vehicle registration certificate (registration certificate part I) after registration! An appointment is also required for this. You will find the request in the online appointment booking under "Vehicle registration". Please book "Transfer of a vehicle previously registered in Germany" here.
Exceptions to the obligation to register:
- Anyone who is currently registered with a registration authority in Germany and moves into another residence (second home) for a period of no longer than six months does not have to register or deregister for this residence. However, as soon as the stay exceeds six months, you must register a secondary residence within 14 days.
- If you have your main residence abroad, you only have to register if your stay in Germany exceeds three months.
- Citizens who are currently registered with a registration authority in Germany and maintain this residence do not have to register if they move into hospitals, nursing homes or other residential care facilities that provide care for people in need of care, people with disabilities or people with reduced mobility. However, registration is required if the facility is your future sole place of residence.
Do you also have a passport but did not have it with you at your registration appointment? You can still change your place of residence in your passport at a later date if your registration has already been completed and your ID card has already been changed. To update your passport, please speak to the information desk at the Citizens Service Center during the Citizens Service Center's opening hours.
