New cycle lanes for Bonn

Selected streets in the Bonn city area are already designated as cycle streets and there are more to come. These form the basis for a continuous network for bicycle traffic. You can find out here where cyclists are particularly safe in Bonn and where they are allowed to set the pace.

New Bonn cycle lanes are clearly marked - as in the picture on the banks of the Rhine.

Of Bonn's roads, 30 kilometers have been designated as bicycle lanes, with a further 19 kilometers to follow from April 2024. To this end, the city of Bonn has developed a new marking standard that corresponds to the current state of the art and science and meets the requirements of the  citizens' petition Radentscheid Bonn.

Not only cyclists will benefit from Bonn's new cycle lanes, but pedestrians will also have sufficient space. Tradesmen, care services and delivery services can also park in the restricted no-stopping zones of the cycle lanes for the duration of their work with a corresponding permit.

Resolutions and planning

New routes for cycle traffic

Cycle routes serve to bundle cycle traffic and are central main routes in Bonn's cycle network. Main routes are intended to create attractive and safe cycling connections between Bonn's districts, to the surrounding area and between central origins and destinations. Bicycle lanes are therefore set up both where the proportion of cyclists is high and where they are to be given priority in the future. As a rule, cycle lanes are set up on the secondary road network of motor vehicle traffic, thus contributing to the decoupling of the two types of traffic in the urban area.

With the implementation of the current cycle lanes, the following routes will be established and/or supplemented. In some cases, cycle lanes already create an important connection for cycling facilities that are currently being planned:

Rights and obligations in cycle lanes

Motor vehicle traffic is only permitted in cycle lanes if this is explicitly authorized by an additional sign. But even then, cars and other motor vehicles are only guests in cycle lanes. Cycle traffic sets the pace here, cyclists may ride at any time at their desired speed and also side by side.

The city council resolution on the cycling decision contains new requirements for cycle lanes: In future, these must have a minimum width of 4.5 meters so that cyclists can encounter each other without conflict and overtake safely - even if they are riding side by side. In addition, cycle lanes should be kept free of through traffic and must be clearly marked.

The city of Bonn is therefore marking new cycle lanes with a newly adapted design: the edge of the road is colored red and bicycle pictograms signal to all road users that cycling sets the pace here!
