B56 junction to be converted into an intersection with traffic lights

The junction of Bundesstraße 56/Reinhold-Hagen-Straße/Bundesgrenzschutzstraße in the district of Beuel is already at the limit of its capacity for the traffic volume at peak times and will exceed this in future. For this reason, the state authority Straßen.NRW is planning to expand the junction. In accordance with the resolution passed by the council on June 13, 2023, the city administration is to support the state-owned company and plan an intersection expansion including traffic lights.

Some pedestrian and cycle traffic is to be routed in tunnels under the junction and in its immediate vicinity. In addition to the existing plans, additional crossings, including diagonal connections, are to be examined. The cycle traffic routing is to be implemented in accordance with the cycling decision and aspects of (perceived) safety are to be taken into account.

In addition to this decision, the council also revoked its decision from 2017 to convert the junction into a traffic circle. The junction expansion with traffic lights is significantly cheaper than the traffic circle solution. Earlier cost estimates amounted to 2.7 million euros for the traffic light-controlled variant and seven million euros for the traffic circle solution. In view of the general cost increases in recent years and especially in recent months, an increase in costs by a factor of 1.5 can be assumed. The variant with traffic lights would therefore cost around four million euros and the traffic circle variant around 10.5 million euros.

In addition, the planned residential park II in Vilich-Müldorf with up to 420 residential units is to be accessed via the intersection.
