The construction work will be carried out from north to south, i.e. from Koblenzer Tor to Bundeskanzlerplatz. During the works, the lane for motorized traffic in each direction will remain unaffected. In the section where construction work is taking place, the cycle lane set up for the traffic trial is generally temporarily unavailable, so the administration recommends that cyclists use alternative routes during the construction period, for example along the Rhine or in Kaiserstraße. In the areas of Adenauerallee where no work is taking place, the lane will also be available for cyclists.
From the beginning of June, the sewer in the Koblenzer Tor area up to Am Hofgarten street will be renovated using the trenchless pipe-lining method, whereby a pipe is pulled into the existing sewer. The first step is to create a 13-metre deep excavation pit made of shotcrete using the open trench method for a manhole structure in the area of Adenauerallee house number 23. Partial road closures in the public road and sidewalk area are necessary for this work.
From the beginning of July, several gullies will be renovated in sections of around 150 to 200 meters from the street Am Hofgarten so that rainwater can flow safely from the street into the very deep sewer again in future. At the Bundesrechnungshof and the former children's hospital, two existing manholes in the roadway are being rebuilt in an open manner. Partial closures in the public road and sidewalk area are also necessary there. The cycle lane from south to north will not be available during this time. It is planned to renew the sewer along the entire route - except for the manhole renovations - using the pipe lining method.
Following the sewer construction work in individual sections, the road surface will be renewed. The administration is still examining whether it makes more sense to renew the entire length of the carriageway after all the sewer construction work has been completed in order to ensure time-efficient implementation or whether it should be carried out in sections. The administration will provide information on the outcome of the consultations in good time.
The subsequent marking of the roadway will be carried out in accordance with the council resolution yet to be passed. A discussion is planned at the council meeting on August 29, 2024 and the preceding committees (district council, mobility and transport committee). If sections are completed before the end of the political consultations, a temporary route that complies with road traffic regulations will be created.
The entire construction project is expected to be completed by mid-May 2025.
Evaluation of the experiment
Over the next four weeks, the administration will evaluate the traffic trial in accordance with the politically agreed criteria. The following agreed criteria will be used to evaluate the trial for each individual direction of travel:
- The average travel time averaged over the entire day from Bundeskanzlerplatz to Koblenzer Tor and in the return direction must not be more than 4 minutes higher than the average value in the year prior to the traffic trial (measured by month).
- The peak travel time (5 p.m. to 6 p.m.) for the same route may not be longer by more than 8 minutes on a monthly average compared to the comparative value at the same time of day with two lanes.
An externally commissioned specialist office will compile the findings from the trial phase. The evaluation of travel times will also be prepared for a period before the traffic trial was set up as a benchmark. In order to evaluate the effects of the traffic trial in the immediate and distant surroundings, an area-related analysis and evaluation of the speeds and volumes of vehicles recorded before and during the traffic trial will also be carried out.
On August 29, 2024, after the 2024 summer vacations, the Bonn City Council will decide on the final design of the new lane splitting in accordance with the decision points of the original proposal (DS 230853 (opens in a new tab)), following consultation in the Committee for Mobility and Transport and in the Bonn district council. Until this decision is made, the current traffic routing, which complies with road traffic regulations, will remain in place.
Background
After renovation, Adenauerallee should be safe, clear and comfortable for all road users in the future. Wider cycle lanes will have to be created for the many cyclists there in accordance with current regulations, as the cycle lane marked out there up until the test phase no longer meets current safety standards. The city council decided to test the planned traffic routing.
For this purpose, a width of 2.70 meters of the right-hand lane in both directions has been separated for cycle traffic with illuminated beacons and yellow markings, while one lane in each direction with a width of 3.50 meters is now available for motor vehicle traffic.
