Their focus is on improvements for pedestrians. The sidewalks on both sides of the shopping street are planned to be the same width and the carriageway will be seven meters wide. On the one hand, this is to ensure that there is still enough space for cyclists and, on the other, that there is sufficient distance between the streetcar and the side areas. The side areas are to be made usable for people on foot and stationary vehicle traffic and bollards are to be reduced to a minimum.
In addition, the transition between the side areas and the traffic area should be made with only a "soft" separation (e.g. gutter) so that it is always possible to change sides of the road without barriers. In addition to sufficient space for pedestrian traffic, the approved variant could include bicycle parking facilities, seating, tree beds and outdoor catering. The Rathaus streetcar stop is planned to be barrier-free on both sides. In consultation with the disabled community, the stops are to be planned with a railing to the adjacent footpath.
The costs for the redesign are currently estimated at just under four million euros. Due to the necessary relocation of the streetcar tracks, a planning approval procedure is to be carried out.
In addition, the council decided to examine a 20 km/h zone (traffic-calmed area) on Friedrich-Breuer-Straße between Konrad-Adenauer-Platz and Doktor-Weis-Platz. In the medium term (within the next two to three years), a few parking spaces are to be removed and converted until Friedrich-Breuer-Strasse is completely redesigned.
Since the first week of June, the city has been testing a modified traffic routing on Friedrich-Breuer-Strasse for six months. It is closed to private motorized traffic between Konrad-Adenauer-Platz and Hans-Böckler-Straße. The section is still open to buses, trains, cabs, delivery traffic and bicycles.
