City of Bonn

Mobility: On new paths.

The goal: By 2035, all Bonn residents will get from A to B in a climate-friendly way

Around a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions in Bonn are caused by mobility alone. There is therefore great potential for climate protection in this field of action. Climate-neutral transport can be achieved by avoiding motorized transport (fewer, shared and shorter journeys), shifting motorized transport to environmentally friendly means of transport (more walking, cycling and public transport) and electrifying the remaining motorized transport.

The city is making environmentally friendly forms of mobility such as buses, trains and bicycles more attractive - and cleverly linking them together. Climate-friendly drives will be the standard for motorized mobility by 2035. Whether car, bike or scooter: Bonn is also focusing on shared mobility, as it saves space and costs for everyone. Expanding our infrastructure will make it easier to get around Bonn. And traveling together with others also saves CO2.

There is still a lot to do. However, it is clear that mobility in Bonn is already becoming more diverse: Although Bonn is growing, car registrations in our city are falling - showing that alternatives are being well received. In the ADFC Cycling Climate Test 2022, Bonn was also named the city that has improved its cycling infrastructure the most in recent years. And: Bonn is the public transport record holder. For 99.8 percent of Bonn residents, the nearest public transport stop is less than 600 meters away. That is the absolute record for the whole of Germany. (Source: Pro-Rail Alliance)

The mobility transition is one of the biggest levers for climate protection. It also makes Bonn a better place to live - with cleaner air, less noise and safe cycle paths and footpaths for everyone in Bonn. In addition to protecting the climate, the mobility transition is also about the fair distribution of public space, safety, quality of life and participation. This is why there are numerous mobility measures that are being planned and implemented outside of the climate plan.
