City of Bonn

Renovation of the Viktoria underpass expected to begin by May 2024

By the beginning of May 2024, the City of Bonn is expected to begin renovating the Viktoria underpass between Am Alten Friedhof and Herwarthstraße/Endenicher Straße. A wider, brighter and friendlier underpass will improve the connection between the west and city center.

At its meeting on September 19, 2021, the Bonn City Council approved the tendering and execution of the "Alter Friedhof pedestrian and cycle path underpass" project. This is because the Cologne district government has approved an early start to construction by the grant provider without the need for a grant.

At present, the pedestrian underpass, which makes a neglected impression, can only be reached via stairs and is barely visible. The underpass is to be widened and made brighter and friendlier. This is based on the plans drawn up by scape Landschaftsarchitekten GmbH.

Barrier-free expansion

The Viktoria underpass will be extended to the green area in front of the old cemetery and made barrier-free with new ramps and steps. The design of the surrounding area includes the pedestrian and cycle path connection in the direction of Thomastraße and Endenicher Straße/Herwarthstraße and via the former storage area to the Wittelsbacher Ring/Endenicher Straße junction and in the direction of Immenburgstraße. The surrounding area will also be upgraded in terms of design.

The cost estimate is around 10.3 million euros. In view of the continuing rise in construction prices, the costs will not be known until the tendering process has been completed.

What happens next?

The tender documents for the Viktoria underpass construction project were already largely prepared in mid-2022 and are now being updated. To this end, the rail closures required for the construction project must first be newly coordinated with Deutsche Bahn and applied for. Finally, the possible start of construction also depends on the approved rail closures. The work can be carried out in parallel with the work on Bornheimer Strasse, but must be largely completed before construction of the Thomastrasse/Viktoriabrücke road ramp can begin.
