The major project in Bonn achieved a clear interim success with a unanimous result. Now the city is hoping for rapid support from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Inclusion in the public transport requirement plan by the state would enable access to funding for the Bonn project.
As an extension of the existing light rail line 63, four new stops are to be developed over a length of 2.6 kilometers in Buschdorf on a disused former line. The extension can largely be implemented on the existing route due to an old existing rail system. The project achieves a benefit-cost factor of 1.41 and is therefore economically viable and generally eligible for funding. The costs are estimated at around 31 million euros and, according to an independent analysis, up to 4,200 passengers per day are expected.
After the city council had already approved the administration's plans at the end of August, the city of Bonn asked the Cologne district government to obtain the approval of the Cologne Regional Council, to propose to the State Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport that the project be included in the public transport requirements plan of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and to request the agreement of the transport committee in the state parliament.
Thanks to the planned extension, local transport in the north of Bonn will be significantly strengthened. The journey time from Bonn Central Station to the planned new stops will be approximately halved compared to the current bus connection. The four locations Friedlandstraße, Schlesienstraße, Gewerbepark Buschdorf and Friedrich-Wöhler-Straße (Nordbahnhof) were initially specified as future stops.
Now that the local authority and the region have given their approval, the course for a timely start to the project must be finally set at state level.
Background
The plan is for light rail line 63 to continue from the Buschdorf stop to Friedrich-Wöhler-Straße/Am Josephinum. The future route branches off from the existing Bonn-Hersel light rail line north of the "Buschdorf Straße" service road bridge and is connected to the route of the Hersel-Bonn-Nord siding, the former route of the Köln-Bonner-Eisenbahn, via a track curve. This route is then used as far as the junction with Friedrich-Wöhler-Straße/Am Josephinum. In this way, the Buschdorf district, the Buschdorf industrial estate and the north-western part of Auerberg will be connected to the light rail system.
