Rathausgasse/Am Hof/Wesselstraße: basic concept for redesign

The City of Bonn wants to redesign the streets Rathausgasse, Am Hof and Wesselstraße. The streets are to be given a higher quality of life, more greenery and an overall upgrade. Traffic is to be calmed and cycling made safer. Last but not least, the aim is to integrate the main university building more closely into the city center and its pedestrian zone.

At its meeting on February 9, 2023, the Bonn City Council adopted specifications for further planning. This basic concept envisages a flat traffic area, without barriers and edges, with tactile orientation options for visually impaired people. The quality of stay is to be increased and as many shady trees as possible are to be planted. The speed of motorized traffic is to be reduced. In the future, the Rathausgasse/Am Hof/Am Neutor axis is to be relieved of bus traffic in order to increase the quality of stay.

The division of the street space and the bicycle traffic routing are still open. To this end, the administration has developed two proposals from different variants:

  • The so-called "Variant 2+" is characterized by wide side spaces and a narrow lane. In the direction of the central bus station, flowing traffic is routed in mixed traffic at a speed of 20 km/h, while in the direction of the Rhine, only bicycle traffic is permitted and is to be given a visually and haptically separated strip (2 m wide). At the same time, generous spaces are available in the side areas, which can be used in particular for wide footpaths, greenery and loading zones, but also for seating and bicycle parking facilities.
  • Variant 4 features a narrow lane, a bidirectional cycle path and side spaces on both sides. This provides cycle traffic with its own lane in both directions, so that the remaining motor vehicle and bus traffic is largely separated from cycle traffic. Compared to option 2+, the space required for moving traffic is greater in option 4, meaning that there is less space available in the side areas for the above-mentioned uses and services.

Based on more detailed planning of the two variants, the Bonn City Council is to make a decision in March 2023 on the allocation of the future (mixed) traffic area, including bicycle traffic routing. By September 2023, the city would like to submit an application for funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, including design planning and cost estimates, to the Cologne district government. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024.
