Adenauerallee: City makes first optimizations

The city of Bonn is implementing the first optimization options for the traffic trial on Adenauerallee: to increase traffic flow, the green time at the junction of Weberstraße and Zweite Fährgasse has been extended in favour of Adenauerallee. In addition, the signage for eight loading zones was retrofitted, which residents with a resident parking permit can use to park their vehicles in the evening and at night.

Adjustment of the traffic lights on Weberstrasse

When observing the traffic trial on Adenauerallee, the city of Bonn noticed in the first few weeks that a particularly large number of motor vehicles gathered at the traffic lights on Weberstraße/Zweite Fährgasse. In the online participation in the traffic trial and at the city's dialogue stands, the desire for improved traffic light control in favour of Adenauerallee was also repeatedly expressed.

The city of Bonn has therefore had the traffic lights reviewed. The decisive factor for the length of the green time at this point is not the motor vehicle traffic, but the time that pedestrians and in particular people with restricted mobility need to cross the road safely. In the case of the traffic lights at the Weberstraße/Zweite Fährgasse junction, the test showed that there was room for maneuver so that the green time saved at the crossroads could be allocated to traffic on Adenauerallee. The green time for the intersecting roads was therefore reduced. The adjustment was made on Tuesday, March 26.

With this optimization, Adenauerallee is given up to 17 seconds longer "green" during the day, at night (from 20:30) the green time extension is 11 seconds, in each case per cycle (90 seconds). This means that on average around eight more vehicles can pass through the junction per green phase.

In future, pedestrians wishing to cross Adenauerallee will have between 17 and a maximum of 34 seconds to cross. The green time of at least 17 seconds corresponds to the guidelines for traffic lights.

In order to ensure the flow of vehicles from Weberstraße in the event of increased traffic volumes, the green time can be extended to up to 34 seconds if the inductive loop located there detects vehicles. The green time for pedestrians is then automatically extended as a result of the so-called "activation".

Improved signage for delivery zones

In addition, the city of Bonn has determined that not all eleven loading zones along Adenauerallee are correctly signposted and will also improve this situation in the short term. If not already in place, all loading zones along Adenauerallee will receive a notice stating that there is only a temporary ban on stopping between 8 am and 6 pm. The additional signage "Residents free, 6 p.m. to 8 a.m." will allow residents with a parking permit to park in the loading zones outside of delivery times. This measure is intended to create additional parking options for residents during the times when most working people are usually at their place of residence.

If signs are tampered with, as has already happened, the company responsible is instructed to put them back in the correct form as soon as possible.

Background to the measure

Adenauerallee needs to be renovated and should then be safe, clear and comfortable for all road users. Wider cycle lanes must be created there for the many cyclists in accordance with current regulations, as the cycle lane marked there no longer meets current safety standards. Following a decision by the city council, the city is currently testing the planned traffic routing in a traffic trial. During the trial run, it should become clear whether the planning has proven itself in practice and what can or must be improved. The city of Bonn is therefore keeping a very close eye on developments on Adenauerallee.

On the other hand, there are many opportunities for public participation so that residents and interested parties can pass on their observations to the administration during the traffic trial.
