While studying agricultural sciences, the two wondered how to get more people involved in organic food production in the city. And they found an answer: They leased a plot of land from the city and got started with their idea of a neighborhood project. There are now 14 raised beds at Stadtfrüchtchen, which are used by the members of the association. A beekeeper has also found a home with his bees. People help each other, share plants, seeds and knowledge.
When a vegetable craving strikes, Imke doesn't have to think twice: "Instead of buying peppers in plastic, I just think about what I have left in the garden, drive over and harvest what's there anyway". "You automatically eat seasonally and are more willing to experiment in your own diet," says Miriam happily.
By producing vegetables locally, Stadtfrüchtchen avoids long transportation routes and therefore CO2 emissions. In addition to these positive climate effects, her garden is much more: an oasis of peace, an insect paradise, a place of learning and a communicative meeting place for all interested parties.
