City of Bonn

Diversity Charter

The City of Bonn joined the "Diversity Charter" following a unanimous decision by the Council in 2007 and has thus committed itself to creating a prejudice-free working environment. At the same time, the city is calling on companies and institutions in Bonn to also sign the "Diversity Charter".

Contents of the "Diversity Charter"

  • All employees should be valued, regardless of gender, ethnic origin, religion or ideology, age, sexual orientation and identity.
  • As an international city, a UN city, a university city and the headquarters of internationally active companies, Bonn is ideally placed to breathe life into a culture of diversity, respect and appreciation.
  • For the City of Bonn, diversity is an important aspect of human resources development, because bringing together different perspectives and experiences means gaining special creativity and efficiency.

The guiding principle in practice

  • The city administration actively solicits applications from people with a migration background, especially when recruiting junior staff. Intercultural competence and multilingualism are seen as additional qualifications in the selection process.
  • A good work-life balance through part-time employees, part-time training opportunities and flexible working hours is an important motivating factor for mothers and fathers.
  • Particularly in the engineering professions, where "traditionally" few women are employed, the city administration of Bonn has made significant progress in recent years. This is because female perspectives in supposedly typically male professions are changing fields of work and leading to more complex results.
  • Equal participation must be made possible for people with disabilities. 6.5 percent of employees at the city administration are currently severely disabled or have equal rights. The City of Bonn benefits from their special experience and differentiated assessments on the way to a barrier-free city and administration.

Background

The "Diversity Charter" is a corporate initiative to promote diversity in companies and institutions, which now has almost 3,000 signatories. Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel is its patron. The Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration supports the initiative.
