Cycling planning follows the principle of so-called supply planning. This means that suitable cycling routes and infrastructure should increase the share of cycling in the total volume of traffic. In Bonn, the aim is to increase the share of cycling to 25 percent in the future.
Mayor Katja Dörner: "The resolution on the cycling network plan is an important milestone for Bonn's transport planning. It allows us to better prioritize cycling projects based on their importance to the network and to weigh up the interests of the different modes of transport appropriately. In future, a particular focus will be on closing gaps in the cycling network. Cycle lanes are a suitable instrument. They open up main routes for bicycle traffic on the secondary road network for motor vehicle traffic, allowing us to better bundle traffic flows."
The planning of the cycle network, which should include cycle connections between all parts of the city, is based on existing and future sources and destinations. Such sources and destinations are residential areas, educational institutions, kindergartens, shopping centers, bus stops, workplace concentrations, local recreation areas, sports facilities, swimming pools, etc. In addition, connections to neighboring and superordinate cycling networks and thus to the municipalities in the Bonn region are to be ensured.
The individual measures required to implement the cycling network will be submitted by the city administration to the political bodies for approval.
