Overview

The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany is awarded by the Federal President for special services to the Federal Republic of Germany. Special merits can be earned in all areas, e.g. also through human help that has been provided with personal commitment. There are different levels of the order.

Anyone can make a suggestion for the awarding of the Order of Merit. This can be addressed to the municipality of residence of the nominee as well as to the relevant district, the state authorities (district governments, ministries, state chancellery) or the Federal President. The responsible district government will process the suggestion for an order, regardless of which authority receives the suggestion.

All known personal details of the nominee (surname, first name, date and place of birth, place of residence, profession and possible retirement) should be stated in an informal letter of suggestion. In addition, the particular merits on which the suggestion is based should be stated as specifically as possible (with time details) and who can also provide relevant information on these particular merits (reference addresses).

On the basis of a suggestion for an order, which is usually sent by the district government, the merits of the nominee are investigated within the city administration. In addition, the reference persons living in Bonn named by the nominator are asked for their opinion. Once the investigation has been completed, a report is sent to the district government. The statements will be enclosed.

In addition to the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, there is also the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is awarded to individuals who have rendered outstanding services to the state.
