This is a press release from bonnorange
bonnorange AöR is part of the traffic turnaround. The municipal company is switching to climate-neutral drives and is looking into the possibilities of reorganizing waste disposal, which could offer less motorized private transport, and tested sensors to measure temperature and humidity on selected cycle paths during the last winter service season, whereby no adjustments had to be made to route planning based on the live data from the four city districts.
However, the traffic turnaround also poses challenges for bonnorange. This is the case with protected bike lanes, for example. While on a road with a marked-off area for cyclists, a large snow clearing vehicle can push the snow away, two vehicles of different lane widths regularly have to be used in a protected bike lane. These road construction changes therefore have an impact on the planning of winter road maintenance.
In principle, the same requirements apply to winter road maintenance on cycle paths as on carriageways. Accordingly, bonnorange is commissioned by the City of Bonn to clear and grit the traffic-critical and dangerous sections of inner-city cycle paths (independent cycle paths with traffic sign 237 and separate cycle paths and footpaths with traffic sign 241 on the section for cyclists).
In February 2021, the council of the City of Bonn adopted the citizens' petition "Radentscheid Bonn" with a majority of 87% of the votes. Since then, the city administration has been tasked with planning and implementing measures to achieve the seven cycling referendum goals. Goal 1 is a safe and continuous cycle path network for Bonn and Goal 6 is to keep the footpaths and cycle paths usable. To this end, bonnorange AöR will now provide a continuous north-south and east-west connection for cyclists. On the left bank of the Rhine, the connection runs from north to south along the cycle path along the Rhine between Graurheindorf and Mehlem. The route on the right bank of the Rhine runs from the northern bridge via Hans-Lennarz-Damm, Erna-Neubauer-Damm, Wolfgasse, An der Gierponte, along Hans-Steger-Ufer, Johannes-Bücher-Ufer and Hermann-Bleibtreu-Ufer via Oberkasseler-Ufer to the city limits.
The east-west link runs along Siegburger-Str., with bonnorange AöR taking over winter maintenance in the city from the Siegburger-Str./Maria-Montessori-Allee junction - before that, the North Rhine-Westphalia road construction authority (Straßen.NRW) is responsible. The route runs via Bröltalbahnweg, An Der Gierponte along the Rhine and via Friedrich-Breuer-Straße into Hermannstraße, then over Kennedybrücke and further along Oxfordstraße and Elisabeth-Selbert-Platz via Maxstraße, Vorgebirgsstraße, Hochstadenring, Guido-Westerwelle-Brücke, Endenich-Straße, Hermann-Wandersleb-Ring, Rochusstraße and finally on Am Burgweiher to the Bahnhofstraße junction.
With 196 employees and a total of 23 vehicles equipped with snow plows and gritters, bonnorange AöR is ideally equipped for winter road maintenance. In order to be prepared for any weather situation, the weather analyses are studied twice a day. The winter service works in three priority levels and concentrates in particular on sections of road that are important for traffic and dangerous. Priority level 1 includes dangerous sections of important roads, direct hospital access roads, uphill sections of local public transport and through-roads on classified roads. These roads are cleared and prepared with gritting agents such as brine. For this purpose, bonnorange AöR has exhausted the full silo storage capacity of 900 m³ of de-icing salt (NaCl) at the Lievelingsweg, Weststraße and Hardtberg sites, and any necessary replenishment has been contractually secured. In addition, two brine systems with a total capacity of 16,000 liters are used. During winter service, the colleagues who normally carry out street cleaning drive special missions in these specially equipped clearing and gritting vehicles. bonnorange AöR staffs the winter service shifts every working day from 3 am to 10 pm. A 24-hour on-call service is set up for nights, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. If it snows through the night, bonnorange employees also remain on duty around the clock.
To ensure safe mobility in the city, the citizens of Bonn must also fulfill their obligations. bonnorange AöR would like to point out once again that, according to Bonn's street cleaning statutes, the stops of public transport facilities as well as the entrances to houses and sidewalks and shared footpaths and cycle paths are generally subject to the traffic safety obligation of the residents who are obliged to clean them. As the use of salt is only permitted here in exceptional situations, bonnorange recommends sand, grit or lava as a blunting agent.
