Overview
Anyone who moves out of an apartment and does not move into a new apartment in Germany must deregister within two weeks of moving out. In principle, deregistration takes place on the day of moving out. Deregistration and handing over of the confirmation of deregistration is possible at the earliest one week before moving out. Deregistrations must be made in the event of
moving away
- moving abroad
- the secondary residence (this deregistration is carried out at the registration office of the main or secondary residence)
- "without permanent residence" (only on presentation of a landlord's confirmation of moving out)
For persons up to the age of 16, the obligation to register is the responsibility of the person from whose home they are moving out. For persons for whom a caregiver or guardian has been appointed who has the right of residence, the obligation lies with this caregiver. The appointment or court order and a valid identity document must be brought along.
If you leave your address behind when you move abroad, you may be contacted by the authorities in connection with elections, for example. The foreign address you provide will be stored in the population register for this purpose.
Procedure
You have the following options for deregistering:
- Service portal: You can deregister using the online form in the service portal. You can find the link under "Forms and links". You will need your BundID to authenticate yourself with your new ID card (online ID function).
- By e-mail or by post: Complete the online forms in full, print and sign them and then send them together with all the required documents by e-mail to:
buergeramtbonnde
by post to:

Please bring all the required documents with you when you visit the service center. An appointment is mandatory. You can make an appointment using the appointment booking form under "Forms and links".
Please note that it is not possible to collect the deregistration confirmation if you apply by post, e-mail or online, as this will be sent directly to the future address abroad. You will receive the deregistration confirmation immediately if you come in person. It cannot be sent by e-mail.
For families (parents and underage children), it is sufficient for one of the persons required to register to appear in person. If you are obliged to register, you can be represented, but you must sign the registration form yourself - in the case of families, one signature is sufficient. However, the person representing you must be able to provide the necessary information about all persons subject to registration, in particular about other residences and their status (main/secondary residence).
Required documents
- Deregistration form (set of forms) - see under "Forms and links"
- Copy of the identity card or residence permit, together with the corresponding national passport
- If applicable, confirmation from the landlord (only for deregistration after "without permanent residence").
If you do not have all the documents, you will not be able to deregister.
