Deregistration according to the Registration Act

Overview

Anyone who moves out of an apartment and does not move into a new apartment in Germany must deregister within two weeks of moving out. In principle, deregistration takes place on the day of moving out. Deregistration and handing over of the confirmation of deregistration is possible at the earliest one week before moving out. Deregistrations must be made in the event of

moving away

  • moving abroad
  • the secondary residence (this deregistration is carried out at the registration office of the main or secondary residence)
  • "without permanent residence" (only on presentation of a landlord's confirmation of moving out)

For persons up to the age of 16, the obligation to register is the responsibility of the person from whose home they are moving out. For persons for whom a caregiver or guardian has been appointed who has the right of residence, the obligation lies with this caregiver. The appointment or court order and a valid identity document must be brought along.

If you leave your address behind when you move abroad, you may be contacted by the authorities in connection with elections, for example. The foreign address you provide will be stored in the population register for this purpose.
