15,389 branches in Bonn
According to the data currently available for 2022, a total of 167,534 people were employed subject to social insurance contributions in 15,389 establishments in the city of Bonn (excluding agriculture and public administration). According to data from the business register of Information- und Technik Nordrhein-Westfalen (IT.NRW), the state statistical office, this was 4,554 more employees subject to social insurance contributions in Bonn than in 2021 (+2.8%, NRW: +1.9%).
99.3 percent small and medium-sized enterprises
IT.NRW's classification of company size categories differentiates between the classes 0-9, 10-49, 50-249 and 250 or more employees. Overall, establishments with fewer than 250 employees account for 99.3 percent of all businesses in Bonn and these 15,279 establishments employ 90,311 people (or 53.9 percent proportionately) who are subject to social security contributions. The other 110 large companies (previous year: 102) with 250 or more employees employ 77,223 people (46.1 percent) who are subject to social security contributions. An analysis of Bonn's business structures reveals a differentiated situation: micro-enterprises with up to 9 employees account for 84.9% of all establishments and 11.0% of employees. The group of small businesses with 10 to 49 employees accounts for 18.0% of employees and 11.5% of establishments, while medium-sized businesses with 50 to 249 employees account for 25.0% of employees and 2.8% of establishments. Among large companies with 250 or more employees, the proportion of employees subject to social security contributions in Bonn (46.1%) is very clearly above the figure for NRW as a whole (34.6%). However, a comparison with selected cities in the Rhineland shows that the proportion of employees in large companies is comparable to that in Bonn: For example, the share of employment in companies with more than 250 employees in the NRW state capital Düsseldorf is 44.2%, in the neighboring city of Cologne 45.3% and in Leverkusen 45.5%.
However, a comparison with selected cities in the Rhineland shows that the number of employees in large companies there is of the same order of magnitude or, in some cases, significantly higher: For example, the share of employment in companies with more than 250 employees - similar to Bonn - is 45.0 percent in the NRW state capital Düsseldorf and 45.7 percent in the neighboring city of Cologne. Leverkusen even has a share of 49.7% for this indicator, meaning that around every second employee subject to social security contributions works in a large company there.
