Rail travel in Bonn is becoming much more pleasant. Bonn will receive 60 modern trams and light rail vehicles that are fully air-conditioned, among other things.
Trams and light rail vehicles differ in terms of boarding height. Streetcars are so-called low-floor vehicles with a boarding height just above kerb height. This means that a low platform is sufficient to enable barrier-free boarding.
Light rail vehicles , on the other hand, are so-called high-floor vehicles with a boarding height of up to one meter. High platforms are therefore required for barrier-free access, similar to railroads. Especially in narrow streets such as Südstadt or Friedrich-Breuer-Straße, streetcars are therefore the better choice. A high platform would take up a lot of space here.
The new streetcars will be on the tracks from 2024. They will run on lines 61, 62 and 65. SWB Bus und Bahn will receive a total of 26 streetcars from the Skoda Transportation Group in the Czech Republic.
From 2027, the first new light rail vehicles in Bonn will run on lines 16, 18, 63, 66, 67 and 68. 32 light rail vehicles will come to Bonn from the Spanish manufacturer "CAF".
The new streetcars are an important means of further expanding local public transport, making it more reliable and attractive, in order to motivate more people to leave their cars at home and use buses and streetcars. After all, mobility is an important building block on the road to climate neutrality in Bonn by 2035.
The new streetcars are not only more modern than the previous trams, they also increase the capacity of rail transport in Bonn. In future, the streetcars will be able to run more frequently. For example, the light rail will run every five minutes between Bonn and Siegburg.
