Since 1985, the City of Bonn has been pursuing the goal of protecting the tree population in the urban area in particular, as trees serve to ensure the efficiency of the natural balance. They should be preserved and cared for because of their rarity, uniqueness and beauty as well as to enliven, structure or maintain the townscape and landscape. They also serve to improve the climate in the settlement area.
In order to achieve these goals, the statutes for the protection of trees in the City of Bonn were enacted. According to this, all
- deciduous trees with a trunk circumference of 100 centimetres or more and
- conifers with a trunk circumference of 150 centimetres or more
- measured at 100 centimetres above the ground - are protected and may not be felled or pruned without permission. Details can be found in the municipal tree statutes.
