In Rheingasse, a one-way street coming from the Rhine in the direction of Belderberg is to be implemented. A speed limit of 30 km/h is being considered, and a right-before-left rule is to be introduced at the junction with Boeselagerhof to speed up bus traffic coming from Boeselagerhof. Cycle traffic in the direction of the Rhine will be routed on its own cycle infrastructure. Whether a separate cycle infrastructure will also be created in the direction of the city center is still open, as is the design and furnishing of the road space.
The introduction of the one-way street regulation will create space for wider areas along the road. Attractive areas for pedestrian traffic with space for other uses and design options are to be created there in a multifunctional strip with bicycle parking facilities, greenery, loading zones and seating. Although it is not possible to plant trees everywhere due to underground cables, more greenery is to be created and areas unsealed.
As motorized traffic will no longer be able to drive towards the Rhine in future, the right turn into Rheingasse on Belderberg - coming from Koblenzer Tor in the direction of Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz - can be dispensed with. This offers the opportunity to redesign the Belderberg/Rheingasse/Rathausgasse junction.
Public participation
Subject to the decision by the Citizen Participation Committee on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the public participation concept provides for various formats for public participation on the outstanding issues. Among other things, the specific routing of bicycle traffic towards the Rhine and the city center, the positioning of loading zones or areas for outdoor catering are just as open as questions about greening options.
These issues are to be discussed with the public on the basis of the previous variants. To this end, an evening event, outreach participation to involve local businesses, broad participation by children and young people and online participation via the participation portal www.bonn-macht-mit.de (opens in a new tab) are planned. The participation is to take place in June and the city administration will issue invitations in good time.
The administration will then review the results of the participation and incorporate them into further planning. After the summer vacations, the results of the participation and the new planning status will be presented to politicians again for consultation.
