City of Bonn

Green space and city center management opened on Budapester Strasse

Two reasons to celebrate: on March 28, 2023, the City of Bonn opened both the Bonn City Center Management Office and the redesigned green space on Budapester Strasse in Bonn's city centre. Both measures are part of the "Inner City" master plan as a program for the - structural - development of the inner city in the coming years.

Flying high! Mayor Katja Dörner and city planning officer Helmut Wiesner on one of the swings.

"The city center is a flagship for the city, which we are revitalizing with these two projects. It is important that as many people as possible benefit from the positive development of the city center and that its image as an attractive city is strengthened," says Mayor Katja Dörner. "All stakeholders in the city center are supported by the city center management. And with the redesigned green space, including play facilities for children, we have created a green island with a high quality of stay and a place to meet."

City planning officer Helmut Wiesner added: "I am delighted that the first results of the master plan's funding period 2.0 are visible after such a short time. An important impulse has been set here at a previously neglected entrance to the city center, which will be continued. With the significantly upgraded small green and play park, further unsealing in the street area and the establishment of the city center management in the pavilion, which has already been the location for the topic of building culture, Bonn4Future and other urban development actors, a new nucleus for urban and inner city development is being created, which can also spread to the bunker in the future."

City center management Contact for people in the city

The promotion and center management for the "Innere Stadt" master plan - or "Innenstadt-Management Bonn" for short - was officially launched on 28 March. Juliane Rohrbacher and Leona Schmidt-Roßleben from the commissioned office Stadtberatung Dr. Sven Fries will be the faces of Bonn's inner city management for the next four years. From now on, they will be the contact persons for all people in their office at Budapester Strasse 7, regardless of whether they live, work, spend their leisure time or run a business or restaurant in the city center.

The aim of the city center management, for which the city planning office and economic development department are responsible, is to accompany the construction projects of the master plan, to establish participation structures and to enhance and strengthen Bonn's city center. Among other things, three disposition funds "Climate and Modernization", "Retail" and "Housing and Neighborhoods" will be set up for this purpose, which can be used by inner city stakeholders, businesses and citizens. In addition, the city centre management will organize events, festivals and campaigns.

In the presence of project manager Kirsten Sump (l.) and David Baier (r.), head of the Office for the Environment and Urban Greenery, Mayor Katja Dörner and city planning officer Helmut Wiesner opened the newly designed green space on Budapester Straße.

Green space at the Windeckbunker a place for all generations

As part of the redesign, the Office for the Environment and Urban Greenery has transformed the green space on Budapester Strasse into an attractive inner-city recreation area for all generations. A playground with a large climbing facility, a double swing and a sand crane next to the children's bookshop will bring life to the park.

Another attraction will be the new fountain field, which will offer a pleasant way to cool off in summer. The fountain field is a central component of the planning as part of Bonn city center's adaptation to changing climatic conditions with more hot days. Due to the current weather conditions, this can only be completed and put into operation in April, when it is no longer freezing at night.

Sturdy loungers and a hammock have been set up in the central green area for people to relax in. Flowering shrub beds and 14 new trees have also been planted around the green center. Overall, there is now more greenery and less sealed surface area in the area.

The construction costs for the redesign of the green space amount to around one million euros, of which around 660,000 euros are being funded by the federal and state governments as part of the "Lebendige Zentren" urban development program.

May 6: The green space is officially named "Budafokpark"

The green space will be officially named "Budafokpark" at an event on May 6, 2023 from 3 pm. The name goes back to the partnership between the district of Bonn and the Budafok district of the Hungarian capital Budapest.

Bonn's district mayor Jochen Reeh-Schall will celebrate the naming ceremony together with his counterpart, Budafok Mayor Ferenc Karsay, and Mayor of Bonn Dörner. Ferenc Karsay will travel from Hungary with a small delegation especially for the occasion. "I am delighted that we have succeeded in naming a square in the center of Bonn-Zentrum after our partner district of Budafok. Town twinning is a visible part of the cityscape. We have succeeded in doing this with this wonderful square," says Jochen Reeh-Schall.
