Upgrading the banks of the Rhine: establishment of bicycle lanes from March 20

After a weather-related interruption, the City of Bonn is expected to continue the gradual upgrading and traffic calming on the banks of the Rhine in Bonn from Monday, March 20, 2023.

The two diagrams show the routing of motor vehicle traffic (left) and cycle traffic (right) on the banks of the Rhine in Bonn once the work has been completed.

As announced, the city's civil engineering department will begin the outstanding work to upgrade the banks of the Rhine:

  • In the section Rheingasse to Zweite Fährgasse, a bicycle lane will be installed.
  • In the section from Rosental to Josefstraße, the missing bicycle lane markings for the existing bicycle lane will be installed.
  • The temporary one-way traffic regulation in Rheingasse will be withdrawn with the work on the banks of the Rhine, so that traffic from both directions is possible again.

The work will be carried out on the basis of the planning approved by the Bonn district council on June 15, 2021 and will take around four weeks. The Civil Engineering Office will carry out the work as smoothly as possible and asks for your understanding for any unavoidable disruptions.

Background

The entire project is based on a council resolution from August 16, 2021, which envisages the short-term upgrading of the banks of the Rhine with a change in traffic routing and traffic calming. The entire Rhine embankment promenade between Zweite Fährgasse in the south and Rosental in the north is to be reserved for pedestrians and cyclists as a matter of principle, thus contributing to an increase in the quality of stay. Exceptions are planned for all necessary supply and disposal traffic such as cabs, residents' traffic, delivery traffic or tourist boat traffic.

Structural redesign in several construction phases

This short-term upgrade will be followed by the structural implementation of the winning design for the redesign of the banks of the Rhine in Bonn. The competition was won by Planorama Landschaftsarchitektur from Berlin, together with VCDB VerkehrsConsult Dresden-Berlin GmbH from Dresden. The redesign of the banks of the Rhine in Bonn focuses on plenty of greenery, attractive recreational areas and a variety of possible uses.

Among other things, the planning took into account the requirements of the traffic area, monument preservation, open space planning, nature conservation and climate adaptation as well as the importance of the banks of the Rhine for tourism. The 1.5-kilometre section, which will be traffic-calmed in future, is intended to become a boulevard where people can linger and stroll, inviting those seeking leisure and recreation.

The redesign of the banks of the Rhine between Zweite Fährgasse and Rosental is an urban development project of the Masterplan 2.0 and is to be realized in several construction phases from the end of 2023. Information on the competition can be found  here (opens in a new tab).
