Lyngsberg nature reserve

The Kottenforst landscape plan has designated the former "Lyngsberg" basalt quarry as a nature reserve since 2013. It is an area of around 5.4 hectares in the urban area of Bonn-Muffendorf, which is now largely wooded and not freely accessible.

Several rock faces and hilltops of various exposures as well as scree slopes bear witness to the former basalt mining. The existing soils have been redeposited and shaped. The terrain is characterized by cuttings, embankments, hilltops and other landforms resulting from the former use.

The Lyngsberg was protected as a nature reserve mainly due to the special importance of the area for the preservation, development or restoration of valuable plant communities and rare, endangered plant species such as wild service tree, field elm, rough carnation, meadow sage, upright cistus, medicinal cistus and winged broom as well as a habitat for protected animal species such as the eagle owl.
