Gender equality

Equality must be lived by everyone!

Gender mainstreaming

Gender equality (Gender Mainstreaming) is an integrative process that scrutinizes the extent to which political decisions and administrative action achieve genuine gender equality.

Within the city administration

The professional equality of women and men is a joint task for all those responsible for human resources. The Equal Opportunities Office of the City of Bonn is involved in all decision-making processes of the city administration that concern personnel issues. It draws up the administration's equality plan in cooperation with the Personnel and Organization Office. The Equal Opportunities Office actively participates in the personnel selection process.

The Equal Opportunities Office also advises on all issues relating to gender equality (Gender Mainstreaming), the advancement of women and career planning. The advice offered is aimed at both employees and line managers.

Cliché-free initiative

Since the beginning of 2022, the City of Bonn has been a member of the Klischeefrei initiative and is thus campaigning for a career and study choice free of gender stereotypes.

Equal Care (Day)

The "Equal Care" theme aims to draw attention to the lack of appreciation and unfair distribution of care work. Care work is an indispensable contribution to our society, but its effectiveness goes under the radar of public perception and appreciation. To change this, Equal Care Day is an annual day of action on February 29 (March 1). The day symbolizes the 4:1 ratio in the distribution of care work and reminds us that men would mathematically need around four years to provide as much private, professional and voluntary care work as women do in one year.

The aim of the initiative of the same name is to distribute the tasks of care and nursing more evenly between both genders, to enhance their value in general and to improve their legal and socio-political framework conditions.

Girls' Day - Boys' Day

In order for both genders to be considered in professional life, both genders must be represented. There are still fields of work and professions that are predominantly chosen by men or predominantly chosen by women. The City of Bonn addresses this by participating in the annual Girls' and Boys' Day, among other things.

Language

Another important approach in connection with gender equality is language. Gender-equitable language is a form of appreciation.

As the city of Bonn is committed to fair, respectful and non-discriminatory language, it has developed guidelines on this.
