The project is part of the Innere Stadt master plan for the future development of Bonn's city center. In March 2023, the Bonn City Council approved the basic concept for the redesign of the street. The basic decision set the course for the future division of public space and traffic routing. Questions regarding the specific design and furniture were discussed with an interested public in various participation formats in the summer of 2023, the results of which were incorporated into the preliminary planning.
The street will be characterized by an almost continuous green structure with a row of trees and perennial plantings on the side facing the city centre. As part of the pedestrian zone, the Wesselstraße section will be designed as a mixed traffic area at the same level. In the Rathausgasse/Am Hof area, there will be a 3.5 meter wide lane for motor vehicles. Cycle traffic will be guided in the same direction in mixed traffic. There will be a two-meter-wide cycle lane in the opposite direction. The reduced lane width will create wide side areas, which will allow for generous sidewalk areas and a multifunctional strip. The multifunctional strip, which varies in width, is used to position street furniture, greenery and outdoor restaurants as well as to secure necessary loading zones.
The square areas - Bischofsplatz and Am Hof in front of house numbers 3-9 - will be planted with more greenery, equipped with seating and equipped with drinking water dispensers to invite people to linger.
