You have to register a vehicle with the city.
The vehicle then receives a permit.
The permit is called a registration.
You are then allowed to drive the vehicle.
For example:
You have bought a car.
The car is registered in Bonn.
The car must now be registered in your name.
Then you are the owner of the vehicle.

This is also the case

• if you receive a vehicle as a gift
• if you inherit a vehicle

Registration in the name of a new owner is called a transfer.
Important for the transfer:
Old papers must be exchanged.
Old papers are the vehicle registration certificate and the vehicle registration document.
The vehicle registration certificate is exchanged
into the registration certificate part 1
The vehicle registration document is exchanged
into the registration certificate part 2

You can keep the old number of the vehicle.
You can continue to use the old number plates.

You can transfer the vehicle via the Internet.
You will need your new ID card.
The electronic function must be activated.

You will need these documents for the transfer:

• the registration certificate part 1
  or the vehicle registration certificate
• the registration certificate part 2
  or the vehicle registration document
• the electronic insurance confirmation
  Your car must be insured.
  You will receive a number from the insurance company.
  The number is called the eVB number.
  This is the abbreviation for
  electronic insurance confirmation number
• Has your car already had an MOT?
  Then you need the report from the TÜV.
  This is the report on the last main inspection.
  Abbreviated to: HU report
• Please also bring your identity card or passport with you.
• You need the SEPA mandate for the vehicle tax.
  You have to pay a tax for your car.
  This tax is called vehicle tax.
  Abbreviated to: vehicle tax
  The SEPA mandate is a permit:
  The office may debit the vehicle tax from your account.

Is the vehicle for a company?
Then please also bring the business registration.
Associations need proof from the register of associations.
This is a list of associations.

Is someone else registering your vehicle?
Then this person must bring a power of attorney from you.
A power of attorney is an authorization:
The other person is allowed to do something for you.
The person must show their own ID card or passport.
And your identity card or passport.

At least 28.80 euros; this fee may increase depending on the work involved.

The following payment options are available to you:

• Cash
• EC card
• Credit card
• Foreign debit card
• Apple Pay and Google Pay

There are no additional fees for cashless payments.

Some vehicles are only registered in the City Hall:

• Electric cars
• classic cars
• Vehicles that are not yet fully paid for
• Vehicles with seasonal license plates
  Season means time of year.
  The word is pronounced like this: Säsong.
  Seasonal license plate means:
  You only drive the vehicle for a few months of the year.
  For example, only in summer.
  You then also pay less road tax.
• Leasing vehicles
  Leasing is pronounced like this: Liesing.
  Leasing is similar to renting.
  You pay something every month for driving the vehicle.
