How the business parking lots work
During the day, only vehicles with craftsmen's parking permits or those with special permits for social services, parcel delivery and delivery traffic may park in commercial parking spaces. At weekends and in the evening and at night (6 p.m. to 8 a.m.), they can be used like regular parking spaces, for example by residents to park their private vehicles.
Commercial parking spaces can be identified by the signage as a "commercial zone" and by colored floor markings including explanatory pictograms. The city of Bonn sets them up primarily in areas where there are usually only a few free parking spaces. This makes it quicker and easier for commercial traffic, which is important for everyone, to get from destination to destination.
This is why the city of Bonn marks business parking spaces
Bonn's mobility turnaround also aims to create space for transportation that currently does not work without a motor vehicle. Commercial traffic in particular often requires a vehicle for daily work and the transportation of large, bulky items. This is why the city is leading the way with business parking spaces, which are still relatively new in Germany. In other European countries, they are often already part of the normal street scene, just like loading zones.
This is because a lack of parking facilities or a long search for a parking space costs commercial traffic time and therefore money. Particularly in densely populated residential areas, finding a parking space can therefore be a major challenge for tradespeople in their daily work. This is why the city is pursuing several goals at once with the business parking spaces:
- In areas with high parking pressure, the (time-consuming) search for a parking space is eliminated.
- Company vehicles do not have to be parked illegally on sidewalks, on cycle lanes or in parking bans; this increases road safety.
- Tradesmen, parcel carriers and care services can park their vehicles in the immediate vicinity of their customers.
In the end, both commercial traffic and their customers in the respective residential areas benefit from commercial parking spaces.
New business parking spaces to be created throughout Bonn
The business parking spaces set up in 2024 in Südstadt and Kessenich are part of a pilot project that the city is implementing in coordination with the Cologne Chamber of Skilled Crafts and the Bonn/Rhein-Sieg District Skilled Crafts Association. Originally, this was to be done jointly with the city of Cologne, but as implementation there is still taking time, the city of Bonn went ahead with the first parking spaces.
The following locations have now been set up:
- Hausdorffstraße 145-151 and 234 and at the parish church
- Pützstraße 8
- Bismarckstraße 19
- Ermekeilstraße 36
- Lessingstrasse 51
- Bonner Talweg in the area of the IHK and Telekom
Feel free to share your experiences
The city is evaluating the success of the new business parking lots after they have been set up and - if the results are positive - intends to examine the establishment of further locations in the city area. The aim is to improve the accessibility of the entire city area for commercial traffic.
