Numerous wild animal and plant species are now endangered or even threatened with extinction worldwide. This is mainly due to the increasing destruction of habitats by humans, but also to the ever-increasing demand for exotic pets. The species protection regulations are intended to counteract this threat. For this reason, many animal and plant species as well as their habitats and refuges are protected.
Therefore, in addition to private pet owners, pet shops and animal breeders must also comply with the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) when keeping, labeling, breeding and marketing (buying and selling) protected animal species. This naturally also applies to dead specimens and parts of protected animal and plant species as well as articles in which such parts have been processed, such as fur coats, ivory products, tropical woods, etc.
The Bonn Lower Nature Conservation Authority is responsible for enforcing international species protection law throughout the city. You can find out the exact protection status of an animal or plant species yourself on the Internet in the online species protection database of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation at www.wisia.de (opens in a new tab) or ask the Lower Nature Conservation Authority.
