Redesign of Bornheimer Strasse

Bonn's city center is changing - and Bornheimer Strasse is changing with it. In line with the "Innere Stadt Bonn 2.0" master plan - a concept for the development of Bonn's city center - the street is being rebuilt and will provide a better connection to the inner city in future.

The future: added value for residents and road users

This is what it should look like after the construction site: The visualization shows the Bornheimer Straße/Eifelstraße intersection with lots of greenery and wide sidewalks.

Since the beginning of 2023, the City of Bonn's civil engineering department, Bonn-Netz GmbH and Deutsche Telekom have been busy digging, converting and replacing pipes. The construction teams are renewing the entire infrastructure for district heating, gas, water, energy supply and telecommunications and adapting it to future requirements.

The urgent need to renovate all the supply lines made it possible to tackle comprehensive new planning and modernization in one go.

The major underground reconstruction will be followed by the redesign of the streetscape with a new cross-section. Overall, Bornheimer Straße will be significantly upgraded: from a mere thoroughfare to a modern city street with a high quality of living and life in Nordstadt. The city administration wants to significantly improve the quality of life through wider sidewalks, accessibility, more tranquillity and more greenery. Road users will benefit from increased safety and better local mobility in future.

Current status

In cooperation with Bonn-Netz GmbH, the civil engineering department has now completed most of the work required to renew the pipes in Bornheimer Straße between Am Alten Friedhof and Ellerstraße. The final road construction has already begun in some areas. The section of Bornheimer Straße between Hochstadenring and Taunussstraße currently has to be fully closed. In this area, the gap between important pipe connections in the two sections of Bornheimer Straße is being closed.

During the closure, Bornheimer Straße between Eifelstraße and Taunusstraße will be open to traffic in both directions. This should make it easier to access Taunusstraße, Gabelsbergerstraße and Hunsrückstraße. It is only possible to enter Bornheimer Straße via Eifelstraße in this section. During the closure, traffic coming from the direction of the old cemetery can use Bornheimer Straße as far as the junction with Hochstadenring. It will then be diverted via Hochstadenring.

After this closure on Hochstadenring, the final work on the surface will begin with the redesign of the road space. According to current plans, the road construction work is expected to last until spring 2025. The majority of the construction work, which began at the start of 2023, has so far involved the excavation and renewal of supply lines. These renovations have taken longer than planned.

Costs: The federal government and the state of NRW bear a large share

In total, the city, Stadtwerke and Telekom are jointly investing around ten million euros in the project, of which the city is contributing around four million euros. However, the federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia are covering a large proportion of this from the "Masterplan Innere Stadt" urban development fund.

Detour: Effects of the construction site on city center traffic

Alternative routes for cycle traffic go through Nordstadt, and motor vehicle traffic is routed via Thomastraße and Kölnstraße. At the Ellerstraße traffic circle, cycle traffic is routed via Vorgebirgsstraße - motor vehicle traffic is already diverted from Heinrich-Böll-Ring.

Traffic regulations for motorists: Bornheimer Straße is currently a one-way street.
Traffic regulations for cyclists: They currently have to cycle around the roadworks.

The aim: to strengthen the residential environment and connection to the inner city

The first mandatory objective of the construction project is the renewal of all supply lines. The city administration is also using this opportunity to improve the overall traffic structure. The basis for this is the plan adopted by the Bonn district council in June 2022.

The redesign is part of the "Inner City Master Plan". This includes: Districts of the "Innere Stadt" will be more closely linked, connections to the city center will be improved, the design of the residential environment will be strengthened and cultural and tourist facilities such as the August-Macke-Haus and the Kunstverein will be better connected to the city center.

The August Macke House Museum is to be more easily accessible in future and more beautifully embedded in its surroundings.
Berliner Platz will also be better connected to the Mackeviertel in the future.

The Inner City Master Plan 2021 - 2025

The redesign of Bornheimer Strasse is part of a comprehensive catalog of measures to beautify the city center and strengthen its function.
