Redesign of the traffic routing at Bertha-von-Suttner Platz

The road space on Bertha-von-Suttner Platz is to be adapted in the coming years and better aligned to the needs of all road users. The aim of the measure is to create a safe and clear traffic flow for all road users.

Whether on foot, by bus and train, on a bike or by car - everyone should be able to move around safely and in a relaxed manner. In order to better take into account the concerns of the various road users in the planning process, the administration is conducting an early consultation by the end of the year.

Why is it necessary to redesign the traffic routing on Bertha-von-Suttner Platz?

The traffic routing at Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz is to be improved. Anyone who drives there and has suggestions can contribute their ideas.

Bertha-von-Suttner Platz was completely redesigned between 2005 and 2008. The barrier-free central platforms for the light rail and streetcar are a great asset and have become well established. However, the traffic situation for motorists, cyclists and bus passengers is not yet perfect and there are often complaints. That's why the city of Bonn wants to make improvements here and redistribute the road space.

Bertha-von-Suttner Platz is part of the east-west axis (B56), which is relevant for cycling and is part of the main route network. This is currently one of the most accident-prone routes for cyclists. In addition to Bertha-von-Suttner Platz, accidents occur particularly frequently on Herrmannstraße, Professor-Neu-Allee and Am Boeslagerhof. In addition to adapting the traffic routing on Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz, an office is therefore carrying out a feasibility study to improve the traffic situation between Kennedy Bridge and Combahnstraße.

Adjustments to the traffic routing along the east-west axis are particularly important for traffic safety. For this reason, the traffic routing in the Am Alten Friedhof and Oxfordstrasse section was already redistributed in August 2022 as part of the road surface renovation. The traffic trial taking place on Hermann-Wandersleb-Ring and the redistribution of lanes on Viktoriabrücke bridge are also part of the plans for the east-west axis. The administration is also currently examining the establishment of environmental lanes on Endenich Straße.

In addition to these objective figures, many Bonn residents also subjectively feel that the cycle traffic routing along Bertha-von-Suttner Platz is particularly unsafe. As part of the Bonn Cycling Dialogue, the city collected and evaluated over 2,300 suggestions for improving the city's cycling infrastructure from Bonn residents. Bertha-von-Suttner Platz was one of the most frequently named as particularly unsafe for cyclists. On the south side, cycle traffic is currently guided across the square via a protective strip in the middle between bus and motor vehicle traffic. Motor vehicles and buses have to cross the hard shoulder several times to turn and stop.

It is not only cyclists who feel unsafe when crossing the square; motorists and bus drivers also find the traffic routing confusing and stressful.

What should the streetscape look like in the future? All Bonn residents are asked!

Until December 31, 2023, citizens had the opportunity to contribute their perspectives and suggestions as part of an initial, early participation process.

Do you have any suggestions? You can submit them here.

The first participation ended at the end of 2023 on the city's online participation platform bonn-macht-mit. There will be another opportunity to participate in mid-2024.

From mid-2024, there will be further opportunities for participation with the presentation of the first draft plans. Potential construction measures will only take place in the coming years and after completion of the construction work in Adenauerallee.
