City of Bonn

Child-friendly community

Since March 2025, Bonn has borne the "Child-friendly municipality" seal, an award from UNICEF and the German Children's Fund. The city administration is thus particularly committed to implementing children's rights locally. The action plan with 20 measures is an important building block.

Bonn is a child-friendly municipality - what does that actually mean?

The City of Bonn is sending out a signal that it is actively committed to children's rights and pledges to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at local level.

Municipal services, planning and structures are to be improved in line with children's rights and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is to be consistently implemented. The city is supported in this by the association of the same name, a joint initiative of Unicef and the German Children's Fund. By participating in the child-friendly municipality process, Bonn is making the well-being of children, young people and future generations its benchmark.

"As a municipality, we have a central role to play in implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at local level, thus laying the foundation for sustainable child-friendly development," says Mayor Katja Dörner. "I am delighted to be launching a project in the city of Bonn with the Child-Friendly Community, which will bring the needs and rights of children and young people more into focus. We are ensuring that the voices of young people are not only heard, but also have real weight in the decisions of the city administration," continued the Mayor.

Why did Bonn receive the seal?

Bonn has been working intensively on the question in a two-year process: How child-friendly are we actually - and what can we do even better? Together with experts, children, young people and many stakeholders from administration, politics and civil society, an action plan was developed. It contains concrete measures to further strengthen children's rights in Bonn - for example by:

  • More participation of children and young people in planning and decision-making,
  • safe and attractive places to play and meet,
  • better access to leisure and sports facilities for all children and young people

Bonn was awarded the "Child-friendly municipality" seal for this commitment. But the work does not end there - on the contrary: we continue, listen, develop new ideas and want to make Bonn even more liveable together with young people.

Want to take part? Absolutely!

Child-friendliness thrives on participation. That's why we invite everyone - children, young people, parents, professionals and interested parties - to get involved, contribute ideas and help shape Bonn. Because a child-friendly city is a city in which everyone can live well.
