District representation, what is that actually?
In 1975, the district constitution was introduced into the municipal code of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (GO NW) in order to ensure greater participation of citizens in the resolutions of the council, to prepare the fulfillment of local tasks and ensure their implementation, to relieve the council in the performance of local self-government tasks and to maintain and strengthen the citizens' sense of political responsibility, even in independent cities with several hundred thousand inhabitants.
A district council consisting of 19 members is elected for each of the four districts of Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Beuel and Hardtberg. The members are elected - at the same time as the council members are elected - for a term of five years.
The chairperson of the district council is known as the district mayor. The district mayor also supports the Mayor of Bonn in performing representative duties in the district.
