State provides 8.3 million euros for first construction phase on the banks of the Rhine in Bonn

The City of Bonn will receive 8.3 million euros in urban development funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for the first construction phase to redesign the banks of the Rhine in Bonn. The corresponding approval notice has now been handed over to Kerstin Hemminger from the city planning office by Thomas Wilk, President of the Cologne Regional Council.

The banks of the Rhine in Bonn are set to become a place to stroll and linger.
The banks of the Rhine in Bonn are to be redesigned in three construction phases. Preparatory work for construction phase one will begin at the end of 2023.

This means that Bonn will receive the highest amount of urban development funding of 37 cities and municipalities in the Cologne administrative district in 2023. The city of Bonn's own contribution amounts to around two million euros, so that the first part of the redesign of the Rhine embankment promenade - between Josefstraße and Alter Zoll - can be implemented with the total sum of around ten million euros.

"I am pleased and grateful that the state is supporting us with this important project for Bonn through urban development funding," says Mayor Katja Dörner. "Lots of greenery, attractive recreational areas and a variety of uses - the banks of the Rhine in Bonn are set to become a boulevard where people can linger and stroll."

Planning for the Rhine embankment promenade is in full swing. The first preparatory work is due to be completed by the end of 2023. Gardening and landscaping work should then begin in the second quarter of 2024, after the flood season on the banks of the Rhine. When receiving the approval notice, the city of Bonn already announced that millions more will be needed for the second construction phase of the Rhine embankment promenade in 2025. The third construction phase is scheduled to begin in 2027.

The redesign of the banks of the Rhine is a central project of the Innere Stadt master plan and was applied for together with more than ten other measures for the funding period from 2021 to 2025. The redesign of Budafok Park and the establishment of city center management in the Baukulturpavillon on Budapester Strasse have already been implemented.
