Renovation of the Old Town Hall in Oberkassel begins

The Old Town Hall in Oberkassel is being renovated this year. The listed building dates back to 1898 and is owned by the City of Bonn. It was added to the city's list of monuments in 1987. Damage to the roof, façade and windows will be repaired. The scaffolding has already been erected for the exterior refurbishment, which is in keeping with the listed building. The main work will start this month.

First, the roof truss and the attic are cleaned. Pollutants are removed and contaminated or damaged parts of the wooden structure are replaced. The roof is then re-covered with slate and the roof drainage is repaired in accordance with the requirements of the preservation order. Water damage inside the town hall caused by leaks in the roof and windows will also be repaired. The historic windows and exterior doors will be refurbished accordingly. The focus is also shifting to the façade: the SGB is having the clinker brickwork and the flashing of the cornices and pinnacles as well as natural stone components, including on the steps and window cornices, refurbished.

As things stand, the exterior renovation will cost around 550,000 euros and is expected to last until autumn 2023. The German Foundation for Monument Protection is providing funding of 45,000 euros for the renovation and the NRW state monument funding program is providing funding of 66,000 euros for 2023.

The "AGORa" association will take over and finance the conversions inside the building, which depend on its use. This includes, for example, adjustments to comply with fire safety regulations, the replacement of floor coverings, painting work and the installation of a disabled toilet.
