The original plans had to be completely revised due to serious defects found in the building fabric and were expanded to include an energy-efficient refurbishment of the building shell and the installation of a ventilation system. The Bonn City Council approved the draft planning and cost calculation for the construction project on June 20.
As part of the project, the existing building, component C, will be extensively renovated. Both the façade and the building services will be completely renovated, fire protection deficiencies will be rectified and the interior will be modernized. The floor plan structure of the classroom layout will be retained. The barrier-free building will achieve an energy efficiency house standard 55. It will continue to be heated by district heating and the planned ventilation system will also meet the energy requirements thanks to a high degree of heat recovery. The roof area will be structurally prepared for the installation of a photovoltaic system, which will be installed and operated by Stadtwerke Bonn.
The total costs are quoted at just under 15 million euros, which includes a risk premium of 10.3 percent and a construction cost increase of six percent per year.
The next step will be to carry out a feasibility study for components A and B based on the experience with component C in view of the expected structural condition and the changed educational requirements, in which possible variants will be compared. This will be presented to politicians for a decision at a later date.
An extension was completed in 2023 and has been in operation since summer 2023.
