Bornheim-Alfter-Bonn commuter cycle route offers safe and attractive connections

As part of its cycle commuter route with Bornheim and Alfter, the City of Bonn has upgraded the existing cycle paths from the border with the municipality of Alfter/roundabout L183n/Bonn-Brühler-Straße to Grootestraße. After seven months of construction, the work was successfully completed in May 2023.

The Bornheim-Alfter-Bonn commuter cycle route is safe and attractive. The 1.1-kilometre Bonn section has been completed.

The city of Bonn implemented the project together with the city of Bornheim and the municipality of Alfter. "With the expansion of the cycle paths, we have created safe, attractive and, above all, efficient connections for cycling - and we are making a significant contribution to the mobility transition, especially for commuters," says Mayor Katja Dörner.

With the construction project, in which the City of Bonn is investing around 800,000 euros - with 90 percent funding - the existing, independent cycle paths have been widened and partially renewed over a length of 1.1 kilometers and have been given improved equipment, such as lighting and drainage. The conversion and expansion began on October 4, 2022.

The Bornheim-Alfter-Bonn commuter cycle route is part of the "Emission-free city center" funding project. This is a joint project between the City of Bonn and Stadtwerke Bonn, funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the NRW Ministry of Economic Affairs. The construction project has been carried out on the basis of the planning approved by the Council on February 10, 2022.

However, the section on Bonn territory is not yet complete. With the bridges "Am Probsthof" and over the K12n, two parts of the cycle commuter route are missing. The construction measures could not yet be implemented due to a lack of land acquisition and nature conservation concerns (K12n). The city is endeavoring to close the gap as quickly as possible.
