Magnificent and elaborately renovated facades can be admired in numerous places in Bonn. The renovation of a house not only serves to preserve its value and personal comfort, but can also, in the best case, serve to pass on an architectural heritage if done well. The City of Bonn, Sparkasse Köln-Bonn and the Haus und Grund Bonn/Rhein-Sieg association recognize the commitment of citizens who preserve their historic property through extensive renovations by holding the façade competition.
The façade competition has existed for more than 50 years. Since then, more than 4,200 homeowners have entered their buildings in the façade competition. The expert jury, consisting of architects, representatives of the painters' guild and the honorary preservation of historical monuments, as well as the city planning officer, make their decision based on the evaluation criteria of stylish and appropriate renovation, the harmony of shapes and colors and the overall impression. The winners receive cash prizes and certificates as recognition.
With this award, the City of Bonn, together with its partners, would like to recognize the efforts of homeowners who have made a positive and representative impact on the streetscape by extensively renovating the appearance of their often historic property. The façade competition, which used to be an annual event, has been held every two years since 2015. The 47th round is currently underway.
Anyone who has renovated their property in the period from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2025 or plans to do so and completes it in good time before the application deadline can take part. The deadline for applications is September 30, 2025. The award ceremony will take place at the beginning of 2026.
