From June: Test for changed traffic routing in Friedrich-Breuer-Straße

In future, the center of Beuel should offer more space for people to stay, walk and linger. In anticipation of the future redesign, the Beuel district council decided at its most recent meeting to temporarily adjust the traffic routing on Friedrich-Breuer-Straße from June 2024 and to upgrade the side areas with mobile elements such as benches and planters.

Based on the results of a public and business participation process launched in fall 2022, the administration has submitted two proposals to the political bodies. On the one hand, the preferred variant of the plans for the future design of Friedrich-Breuer-Straße is to be decided in the political bodies. To this end, the administration has submitted a proposal to the City of Bonn for a decision with the aim of upgrading the center of Beuel with wide sidewalks, accessibility and plenty of scope for design as well as a gastronomic offer.

As the political decision must be made by the council and, in addition, the planning of this preferred option will take some time due to the necessary relocation of the streetcar tracks in Friedrich-Breuer-Straße, a gradual transition is to take place in the meantime in accordance with the feedback from the public participation. To this end, the administration has submitted a second proposal to politicians.

By resolution of the Beuel district council, Friedrich-Breuer-Straße will be closed to private motorized traffic for a period of six months on the section from Konrad-Adenauer-Platz to Hans-Böckler-Straße. The Stadtterrassen project from Zukunftsnetz Mobilität NRW, a temporary project to repurpose current parking spaces, will complement the trial by upgrading the side areas: The existing parking spaces are to be put to new use as recreational areas and for greenery.

The experience gained from these measures is to be incorporated into the selective redesign of the existing area, so that Friedrich-Breuer-Strasse becomes traffic-calmed and more attractive for people to stay and linger even before the redesign takes place. The evaluation will be carried out by means of counts before and during the measure as well as feedback via on-site participation.
