City of Bonn

Budafok (Hungary)

Budafok, the XXII district of the city of Budapest in Hungary, has been twinned with the district of Bonn since 1991.

To this day, meetings between the citizens of the two cities, especially young people, are at the forefront of the town twinning. Official and reciprocal visits by experts from business, associations and schools also contribute to a lively exchange, in which more than 1,300 people took part in the first five years.

Visit by a political delegation from the district of Bonn to the XXII district of the city of Budapest on the occasion of the inauguration of Bonn Park

A delegation from the Bonn district council led by the district mayor, Jochen Reeh-Schall, visited the XXII district of the city of Budapest, Budafok, from September 5 to 8, 2024 at the invitation of the Hungarian mayor, Ferenc Karsay. The occasion was the inauguration of Bonn Park in Budafok as a sign of the twinning relationship between the two districts.

The counterpart in Bonn, the newly designed green space on Budapester Straße, had already been christened "Budafok Park" the previous year. At the invitation of the Bonn district council, Karsay, who was already in office at the time, traveled in person with a delegation from Budafok to take on the honorable task.

In his inauguration speech, District Mayor Jochen Reeh-Schall emphasized:

"I find myself not only among partners, but among friends. A friendship that contributes to understanding between people and thus to peaceful coexistence in a free Europe. The inauguration of Budafok Park in Bonn last year and today's inauguration of Bonn Park in Budafok are a clear sign of this in both districts. In 2022, it was important to the political representatives of the city district of Bonn to set an example of the city partnership relationship with Budafok in the city district. They had found a suitable location with the green island in the center of Bonn-Zentrum. An opportunity to linger was created in a place that is passed by countless people every day and is an inner-city recreation area for everyone, but especially for children.

The park offers young people and the young at heart a wonderful opportunity to play together and engage in various sporting activities, such as a streetball court, a cycle track, an outdoor fitness area and an inclusive playground.

It is to be hoped that both the "Bonn Park" in Budafok and the "Budafok Park" in Bonn will be used intensively in the future and that people will be able to enjoy these two beautiful parks for a long time to come."

District Mayor Jochen Reeh-Schall concluded his speech with the words: "The inauguration of Bonn Park in Budafok is a great honor for us."

"All in all, the trip was a successful and eventful one and I look forward to future cooperation and further exchanges. It is important to me to continue to make an important contribution to international understanding, which is particularly important in today's world," said the district mayor after the trip.

The partnership between the two districts of Bonn and Budafok, which has now existed for 33 years, is strengthened by various joint events, such as the annual student exchange between the Bertolt Brecht Comprehensive School in Bonn and the Árpád Utcai Általános Nemzeiségi Iskola in the XXII district of Budapest, as well as the recurring personal meetings between the two district mayors.
