Vehicle - Red license plates for classic cars

Overview

Red license plates can also be issued for recurring use to the owner of vintage vehicles for participation in events that serve to present vintage vehicles and to maintain the cultural heritage of motor vehicles (Section 17 of the Vehicle Registration Ordinance - FZV).

The issue of the red license plate is linked to the reliability of the owner on the one hand and the age and condition of the vehicle on the other. A number of documents are required to prove reliability, which are listed in more detail below. For the vehicle itself, an expert opinion in accordance with § 23 StVZO from an officially recognized expert or tester or test engineer must be submitted to prove whether it can be recognized as a classic car or a vehicle used for the care and presentation of motor vehicle cultural assets. The vehicle must be at least 30 years old (calculated from the date of the 1st registration!).

The red license plate can also be used for several vehicles - but not at the same time. A vehicle registration booklet is issued by the registration authority for the corresponding vehicles.

The red license plate is initially issued for one year. Subsequently, it is issued for an unlimited period, provided that no violations of applicable law (misuse) become known. A new booklet is issued in the event of changes to the vehicle fleet.

The application can only be made at the main place of residence.
