Art and culture make an important contribution to a diverse and vibrant society. The "General Cultural Work" department of the Department of Culture therefore supports projects from the local independent cultural scene. It also organizes the City Garden Concerts at Alter Zoll, the City Music Day and the city's cultural and meeting festival Vielfalt! With the How to... training series and regular cultural get-togethers, it also offers extensive networking and information opportunities for artists and cultural practitioners in Bonn.

Another important component is the cooperation with the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, including the state programs Kulturrucksack NRW and Kultur und Schule as well as the Kulturstrolche project. Regional cooperation is also strengthened with other projects in the field of cultural education for children, teenagers and young adults, such as Our World, Our Visions - Discover, Experience, Change (2025-2027) or the Rhineland Reading Festival for Children and Young Adults - Käpt'n Book (since 2003).

The department also organizes transnational cultural events in collaboration with various cultural players and international organizations.
