Shape: imposing large conifer with a conical crown when young and a flat, umbrella-shaped crown when old; up to 45 meters high and 15 meters wide
One of the ancient trees that forested various regions around 10,000 years ago.
Trunk: straight
Bark: coarsely furrowed, strong reddish knots
Needles: two-needled (the pine family is divided into two- to five-needled); dark green, prickly, up to 16 centimetres long
Flower: monoecious, female and male flowers on one plant (as with the hazelnut). The male flower is yellow, the female flower is woody - as a harbinger of the cone fruits.
Fruits: cones up to nine centimeters long
Medicinal treatment: with active ingredients from shoot tips; essential oils, resin acid for coughs, bronchitis, kidney, bladder and rheumatic diseases
