The area was designated as a nature reserve on June 16, 2004 via the Ennert landscape plan. The approximately 15-hectare nature reserve is also located in Holzlar.

The main areas worth protecting are the wetlands with relicts of quarry woodland, meadows of whistling grass, small sedge meadows, wet grassland fallow land and other wet deciduous woodland areas in various stages of development and age phases. The nature reserve provides a habitat for numerous endangered animal and plant species.
