Oral thrush (herpes viruses)

Oral thrush is caused by an initial infection with herpes viruses, usually between the ages of ten months and three years, and in milder cases can be confused with hand-mouth disease. The disease is usually harmless.

Complaints

Fever and inflammation in the mouth with very painful blisters and aphthae on the oral mucosa, palate, tongue, gums and lips. Swelling of the cervical lymph nodes.

Newborns are at risk of becoming more seriously ill (inflammation of the brain or eyes).

Treatment is symptomatic: stop itching, reduce fever, drink plenty of fluids. The herpes infection occurs chronically and recurrently, mainly as cold sores, but then rarely with fever.

Incubation period and infection

The time between infection with the pathogen and the outbreak of the disease is two to twelve days.

Infection with herpes viruses occurs via the infectious vesicle contents and saliva during the (chronically recurring) inflammation.

Contact persons and re-admission

Contact persons may continue to attend the community facility and must pay more attention to hygiene, e.g. wash hands frequently, use separate towels. Once they have recovered, sick people are allowed to return to Kita, school and the like.

A doctor's certificate is not required.
