City of Bonn promotes independent mobility for children

With its school mobility management (SMM), the City of Bonn aims to promote independent mobility for children and create safe routes to school. It works closely with schools, parents and politicians to ensure safe and sustainable mobility in the long term.

"Children and young people should be able to move around our city independently and safely. This goal is particularly important to us in the transformation of mobility in Bonn. School-based mobility management is an important step in this direction," explains Bonn's Mayor Katja Dörner.

Introduced in summer 2023, the initiative is part of the climate plan and comprises a range of measures. In a two-stage pilot project, walking school route plans are being developed for four elementary school and cycling school route plans for secondary schools. Schools are receiving external support to establish uniform standards for school route plans. The finished school route plans are to be presented in the second quarter of 2025.

Another aim is to systematically assess the school environment in order to improve safety at critical crossings. In addition, exercise communities such as "walking buses" and "bike buses" are to be promoted, in which children walk or cycle to school together. A central school route portal is to be set up and serve as an information platform for schools and parents. The pick-up and drop-off zone concept will be optimized and the existing pick-up and drop-off zones will be evaluated and adapted in order to improve the traffic situation in front of the school gates in combination with other measures.

To recognize the commitment of schools, an award for "bicycle-friendly schools" will be introduced. This initiative is intended to help promote the independent mobility of pupils by bicycle. Established working groups are to be continued and new working groups developed.
