First public composting toilets installed in the city

The City of Bonn is creating additional public toilets. Two barrier-free and wheelchair-accessible composting toilets will be installed in the city area at the corner of Stresemannufer and Charles-de-Gaulle-Straße in Bonn and at Mirecourtplatz/Hans-Steger-Ufer in Beuel.

The eco-toilet facility consists of three rooms, one with a urinal basin, one with a barrier-free toilet and an operating room containing a urinal tank, a rainwater tank and a wheelie garbage can for collecting and transporting the solids. The composting toilet is not connected to the sewage or drinking water network.

It is a dry toilet. The urine is separated directly from the solids in the toilet. Urine and solids are conveyed to respective collection containers in the operating room and emptied from time to time. No water, no litter and no chemicals are required to use this toilet. And as it is ventilated, there should be no odors. Power is supplied by a solar system installed on the roof of the toilet.

Rainwater is collected on the green roof and used to wash hands at the washbasin in the barrier-free toilet room. The wastewater from hand washing flows outside into a plant bed belonging to the facility, which is designed as a constructed wetland, where it is purified.

Use of the eco-toilet facilities is free of charge. The system should be emptied at least once a week, or several times a week if necessary. The cleaning intervals are determined individually as required. The toilet facilities will also have a QR code that leads to an online form that can be used to report problems, soiling, faults or repair requirements.

There is also a composting toilet on the corner of Stresemannufer and Charles-de-Gaulle-Straße in Bonn.

Public toilets in the city

The composting toilets are helping to increase the number of public toilets in the city. To date, the city maintains seven public toilets (skate park in Beuel, at the church and local train station in Duisdorf, at the Kurpark and Moltkeplatz in Bad Godesberg as well as at Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz and Remigiusplatz in Bonn). A further six toilets located in municipal buildings (e.g. restaurants) are operated by the respective tenants (kiosk at the KD jetty, beer pavilion at the Blue Monkey, post office pavilion, Rheinaue park restaurant, Midi on Münsterplatz, Bastei on von-Sandt-Ufer).

In addition, the public toilets in the municipal office buildings are also available during the opening hours of the city administration.
