The growth of the trees, which are over 60 years old, had caused root pressure, which led to the pavement lifting, particularly in the inner area of the oval parking lot, but especially to damage to the underground sewer and drainage system. The inner area will therefore be unsealed and converted into green spaces and flower beds, as decided by the city council at the end of 2023. The outer ring of the area will remain as a parking lot with the historic 58 parking pockets. In addition, 200 parking spaces for bicycles will be created in the outdoor area.
Städtische Gebäudemanagement Bonn (SGB) has commissioned a company to carry out the civil engineering work, which will start immediately with the sewer and drainage work. A landscaping company will then carry out the restoration and design of the surfaces, including planting and lawn areas.
Beethovenhalle project manager Steffen Göbel is satisfied: "The start of the renovation of the parking lot is another important step on the way to completing the Beethovenhalle. The procedure decided by the council has significantly reduced the costs for the renovation of the canal and the interventions in the ground monument under the parking lot. Guests to the Beethovenhalle can look forward to a high-quality outdoor facility when it opens in December 2025."
