"I am delighted that the council has approved the administration's proposal to redesign the parking lot at the Beethovenhalle in a climate-adapted way," explains Mayor Katja Dörner. Together with the parking lot, the garden monument at the Beethovenhalle is to become a Beethoven Park. "The design of the outdoor area is not only right in terms of climate adaptation. It will also increase the attractiveness of the entire area surrounding the Beethovenhalle. It forms a unity from Stiftsplatz via the Beethovenhalle to the banks of the Rhine, where both Bonn residents and visitors to our Beethovenhalle will enjoy spending time."
As part of the renovation of the Beethovenhalle, the garden monument can be enlarged by around 2,250 square meters by unsealing the inner parking area and upgraded to a Beethovenpark. Former pathways will be taken up in the form of water-bound footpaths. The lighting will be comprehensively renewed and adapted to the requirements of a public park.
Greater added value through redesign of the garden area
From the point of view of the administration, the redesign of the garden area has greater added value in terms of unsealing (sponge city) and improving the urban climate than the changes to the parking facilities. The upgrading of the outdoor facilities of the Beethovenhalle into a park also leads to an improved quality of stay.
A species-rich variety of trees and shrubs will transform the previously sealed areas into vegetation areas. As in other parts of the Beethovenhalle's outdoor facilities, new planting is also planned for the design of lawns and planting areas in order to respond to the challenges of increasing drought and heat as well as to reduce maintenance costs. Above all, however, the aim is to achieve ecological added value.
Parking lots
The Beethovenparkhaus, which has 426 parking spaces, is one of Bonn's largest parking garages and is directly adjacent to the Beethovenhalle. In future, it will be possible to book a parking space there when booking an event ticket. Numerous other parking garages are also available within walking distance.
Based on Bonn's parking space regulations, 120 car parking spaces and 200 bicycle parking spaces must be provided for the Beethovenhalle. These are available on the Beethovenhalle site and in the Beethovenparkhaus as part of a building lease. A new covered parking facility for 100 bicycles will be created on Theaterstraße.
In the past, a clear majority of visitors to the Beethovenhalle have not parked in front of the hall but have used the facilities in the surrounding multi-storey parking lots. The Beethovenhalle is also easy to reach by bus and train.
The Council has instructed the administration to ensure that residents in the vicinity of the Beethovenhalle are protected from parking search traffic as part of the parking space concept to be implemented.
Finances
Around 8.7 million euros have been earmarked for the garden project in the overall cost plan for the renovation of the Beethovenhalle. The city administration is assuming lower costs of just under 8.4 million euros, as the unsealing of a large part of the parking lot means that the scope of the necessary renewal of the sewer and drainage system can be significantly reduced by 333,000 euros. In addition, funding in the amount of 200,000 euros can be applied for from the Federal Ministry for the Environment as part of the federal program "Promotion of measures to adapt to the consequences of climate change".
